Youths Who Run The World – Limbe | June 22, 2019

On Saturday, 22nd June 2019, volunteers from Noela Lyonga Foundation arrived in Limbe at about 7:45am in the Delegation of Youths and Civic Education Hall where the Limbe youths had assembled.

This was followed by the official opening of the programmed by some authorities present. Mr. Marcel, the director of the Multi-purpose Youth Empowerment Centre of Limbe III, opened the event by introducing the Noela Lyonga Foundation team, followed by an opening prayer which was done by one of the participants. Immediately after, there was the singing of the National Anthem and an opening speech by Mr. Isaac Ekombe the Divisional Delegate of Youths and Civic Education Fako-Limbe who welcomed the team and addressed the participants by laying emphasis on the importance of a healthy and active lifestyle. The Delegate also thanked the Youth Leaders of Limbe who assisted in the mobilization of participants. An educator of the Youth Empowerment also gave a word and he departed.

This was followed by a brief presentation of the project and partners by a volunteer coach from the Noela Lyonga Foundation Mr. Agbor Bate who ended with inspirational words to the participants. Miss Noela Lyonga gave a detailed presentation after this. At the beginning of her presentation, she asked the participants to stand up and jump with a shout of Youths Who Run the World. She introduced Sir Dan Thompson as the main inspiration behind the project and spoke about his inspirational journey running 10km all over World and his great support to encourage young people live healthy and active lifestyle through this project. This was followed by a presentation of five active tips for a healthy living which was introduced as the ‘BEANS’. From this, she spoke about the importance of being active through exercising, eating appropriately, avoiding smoking and better sleeping habits.

After the presentation, we proceeded to the 2km run. The run started with stretches in an open space next to the Divisional Delegation hall. After the stretch we ran down to Bokaro Down Beach and back to the Delegation. At the end we had stretches and distribution of water and snacks. Images and videos can be made available on request.

In conclusion, we had 100 participants with 90% between the ages of 12 and 25. The run was a success with the following recommendations:

– Provision of First Aid Boxes should be made available next time

– The runners should always start slowly before speeding up to avoid injuries.
